Ethereum Foundation Sets 2029 Quantum-Resistance Target for Layer 1

The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster set a December 2029 target for making Ethereum’s base layer quantum-resistant across execution, consensus and data. The commitment, published Sept.

7 in an official protocol priorities update, treats a hypothetical “Q-day” in 2030 as an aggressive planning assumption rather than a forecast.

The cluster said the self-imposed deadline will remain non-negotiable at least until January 2027, when it plans to reassess progress in quantum computing with outside experts.

The announcement defines a roadmap target; it does not mean Ethereum has already deployed post-quantum protection. The deadline covers three protocol layers Full readiness is intended to protect Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers.
