Solana’s 150ms Upgrade Is Coming: Could SOL Become the Fastest Major Blockchain?

Solana is preparing for one of its biggest updates. The network has begun testing Alpenglow, a new consensus system designed to cut finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.

Solana’s 150ms upgrade is called Alpenglow. It replaces the network’s existing TowerBFT consensus process with a new voting mechanism called Votor. Under TowerBFT, validators repeatedly vote on blocks over 32 slots before they reach full consensus finality.

At Solana’s traditional 400ms slot time, that process takes around 12.8 seconds. Alpenglow changes the voting structure entirely. Instead of putting validator votes directly onchain and waiting for them to accumulate over many slots, validators send votes directly to one another.
